What artificial intelligence is – in simple words
Artificial intelligence is a program that learns patterns from very many examples. It does not understand the world like a human – it guesses, based on patterns, what fits most likely. That is why AI can produce astonishingly good texts and images – and still claim nonsense with full conviction.
For kids, one sentence is often enough: “AI has read and seen a lot – and then guesses quite well. But it does not know whether it is right.”
What AI does well – and what it does not
Well: recognising patterns, summarising texts, delivering ideas, translating languages, helping with practice.
Not: feeling, taking responsibility, guaranteeing truth, knowing what is right for a person.
Those who know both use AI as what it is: a powerful tool – not a substitute for thinking.
Five rules for families
1. Try together instead of banning. Kids will grow up with AI. Better they learn to handle it at home than in secret.
2. Question the results. “Is that really true?” is the most important question of the AI age. Checking sources is part of it.
3. Private stays private. No names, addresses or photos in AI tools – that applies to kids and adults alike.
4. AI as a tool, not a shortcut. Think first, then ask the AI. Those who only copy learn nothing – those who compare learn twice.
5. The real world wins. Understanding AI and playing outside are not opposites – on the contrary: both belong in a good childhood.
Why this topic matters to us
We believe technology and a real childhood are not opposites. Kids who understand how AI works are not afraid of it – and still do not hand over their thinking.
